Cultural & Art Center

Bowo Yuli Prihandono and Muhammad Arief Paturahman are students of Tanjungpura University Pontianak who ran the Student Job Training program in 2019 at our studio, CivArch design studio - CIVILARC.ID “Business Innovation & Project Management”.

During three months of processing with us, they completed a book entitled 'SPACE Civil & Architecture Volume 2'. This book summarizes their creative process in designing the Sumba Cultural Arts Center, as a result of discussing and sharing ideas that are put into a concept of thought and architectural design.

We advise them to use the metaphor of the shape of Mamuli, a typical ornament from Sumba Island whose basic shape resembles the uterus or female reproductive organs. The shape of the mamuli was chosen as a symbol of femininity to respect the position of the mother. We interpret mamuli as a symbol of fertility with the hope that the presence of the Sumba Cultural Arts Center in the future will produce new and talented artists, and be able to produce works with cultural authenticity rooted in the indigenous people of Sumba.
